“…anxiety appears to be more easily aroused in learning mathematics than it is in other subjects”

Workshops for Teachers

Maureen is available to run workshops for teachers to assist in understanding the nature of mathematical learning difficulties or dyscalculia, and to discuss effective interventions for building mathematical understanding, fluency and problem solving skills.

About Dr. Maureen Finnane.

Maureen is a registered psychologist with many years experience working with children and their families to understand and address developmental, emotional, and learning problems. Maureen worked for 11 years in the Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Queensland Health, where she became aware of the significant impact of anxiety on children’s wellbeing, self-esteem and capacity to learn. In particular, Maureen developed an interest in the distress and learning barriers caused by Maths anxiety, and undertook postgraduate study to research the nature of mathematical learning difficulties. Maureen was awarded a Master of Education (UQ) for her research on interventions for difficulties in learning basic arithmetic facts. She was awarded a PhD from the University of Queensland for her research on mathematical development and factors associated with mathematical learning difficulties. “The role of fluency in mathematical development: factors associated with early learning difficulties in mathematics”.

What Can Maureen Offer You?

Maureen offers comprehensive  mathematicsBardon_Couns-Maureen Maths assessments and interventions to students experiencing maths anxiety and facing significant problems understanding maths concepts, remembering basic arithmetic facts, or applying mathematical reasoning and procedures in problem solving.

Maureen enjoys working with students, families and teachers, not  only to build mathematical skills but to enhance student confidence and enjoyment of mathematics. Maureen helps students to set their own goals for learning, and uses a games-based approach to lessen anxiety and to increase student motivation.

Maureen is happy to work with adults who are facing ongoing maths anxiety, which may be affecting them in their work and daily life.

Maureen is available to run workshops for teachers to assist in understanding the nature of mathematical learning difficulties or dyscalculia, and to discuss effective interventions for building mathematical understanding, fluency and problem solving skills.

What Happens During a Session?

Maureen initially carries out a comprehensive assessment over two sessions to identify children’s strengths and weaknesses in their mathematical understanding and their attitude towards mathematics. The first session involves taking a developmental history and a range of assessment tools are used to identify any gaps in understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures, and to pinpoint a lack of fluency in arithmetic facts and skills.

Detailed feedback is offered to parents or carers following the assessment. If follow-up intervention is indicated, a set of intervention goals is developed with the student. Follow-up hourly sessions are usually arranged on a weekly basis initially, and may reduce to fortnightly sessions.

Maureen consults regularly with parents or carers to discuss the focus of the intervention sessions, and lends visual hands-on resources and games to families to allow further consolidation of concepts between sessions. Maureen uses a range of strategies to address and minimise maths anxiety.

Maureen is very happy to correspond with teachers about current maths topics being taught in class, and offers consolidation of concepts and skills where a teacher sees a need.

How much does it cost?Maureens room
