What is Dietetics?

To really ‘get better’ patients must improve body processes and minimise inflammation, and really understand what is good ‘fuel’ (food) for the body. You must also start to work on your mind as well as stress/anxiety/loneliness/disconnection will slow the body’s ability to repair and regeneration. ‘Getting stronger’ or rebuilding muscle as we age is also crucial. For many, just ‘exercising’ isn’t enough. Having said that, something simple like a regular walk, talk and coffee with friends should be seen as good for the mind AND body.

By getting these ‘health foundation’ solid, means that is doesn’t really matter whether you have diabetes, digestive concerns, pain, weight gain, thyroid issues, heart disease, brain degeneration, fatigue, depression or any other ailment, all will benefit from ‘getting the basics right.

This will mean getting some specific basic blood tests from your doctor. This may indicate inflammation or deficiencies. It will mean changing habits and eating habits (that yes, can be challenging!) It may mean short-term supplementation to re-balance you and then work with diet only. ‘Fuelling’ the body with the right food is crucial.

Our dietitian  Alina will help guide you through this tricky first stage. She is accessible, practical and keeps things simple.

‘Getting the basics right’ also means that once a patient has put on weight; is insulin resistant or has diabetes, ‘removing’ the fat from deep inside the liver, pancreas and visceral fat takes lateral thinking and understanding that weight loss (or ‘emptying out those fat cells’) must be approached much more differently that traditional methods such as calorie counting, exercise, portion control and ‘moderation’.
