About Teresa Hayfield – Hypnotherapist
Teresa Hayfield is a former specialist dentist with a career dedicated to people with medical, physical, and intellectual disabilities — work that demands exceptional patience, trust, and an understanding that no two people are the same.
Teresa witnessed the strength of the mind-body connection firsthand, including completing dental extractions using hypnosis alone — no medication, no anaesthetic.
Teresa works with clients across a wide range of concerns including anxiety, stress, fears and phobias, unwanted habits, addictions, and pain management. She is known for taking the time to demystify hypnosis, ensuring every client feels informed, safe, and fully in control from the very first session. Teresa’s approach is always collaborative, compassionate, and paced entirely to suit you.
Teresa first qualified in Hypnotherapy over 20 years ago with a Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis from University College London, UK. She is a Professional Member of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association and is trained and qualified in numerous approaches and styles of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, as well as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and coaching.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a natural state we slip into daily — like getting absorbed in a movie, daydreaming, or driving on ‘autopilot.’ In this natural state, the part of your brain that keeps you locked into “the way things are” softens its grip, allowing new, healthier ways of thinking and feeling to take root more easily. Research shows this same state also calms your brain’s stress and fear responses, which is why hypnosis can be so effective for anxiety, pain, unwanted habits, and emotional healing. Think of it less like the theatrical tricks you may have seen on stage, and more like giving your brain the ideal conditions to do what it already wants to do — heal, grow, and change.
Around 95% of our behaviour is driven by the unconscious mind — the place where memories, feelings, unmet needs, and deeply learned habits and behaviours are stored. This includes helpful automatic actions like walking or driving, but also unhelpful patterns like worry, anger, anxiety, nail biting, smoking, or overeating. In hypnosis, you are able to access the deeper part of your mind to make the changes you want.
Your brain is incredibly powerful — but sometimes it gets stuck in unhelpful patterns, old fears, or habits that feel impossible to shift no matter how hard you try. Hypnosis works by gently guiding your brain into a deeply focused, relaxed state — similar to that dreamy feeling just before you fall asleep — where your mind becomes quieter, less guarded, and far more open to change.
When you are in hypnosis:
- You remain fully in control
You can hear everything
You are not unconscious
Your mind continues to have thoughts
You gain greater control over your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
What happens during a session
The first session may take up to 90 minutes. Following sessions are around an hour.
To begin, I’ll ask you a number of questions to understand the nature of your presenting issue and what you want to achieve. I’ll also explain some important concepts about how the unconscious mind works. Once I have gathered enough information, we move into action — this is not talk therapy, it is about making real, lasting change. Subsequent sessions build directly on this.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions before you decide to proceed, and with your consent, you will experience hypnosis in your very first session.
